Content Creators
When we look at content creators, it is very important to know who are truthful, some people are reckless even if they’re popular. What becomes mainstream is often becoming mainstream for reasons that it can be used against us. An example is the iPhone, everyone seems to have one yet it isn’t protecting you! Apple is very amazing when it comes to protecting you from other people, but Apple collects everything themselves. That’s why you need to block Apple by DNS on a Mac. With that said, I want to create a detailed guide to content creators.
The Rating System:
Checkmark is the ones who has fully committed to the privacy and security and sacrificed sponsors for high integrity
Minus is the ones who I don’t want to put with the best but also 100% don’t want to disregard. These are worth looking into!
X is the ones who care either too much about profit or straight up lied about privacy. There are a lot better people to listen to.
The Hated One
is a YouTuber who uploads video essays related to privacy, security, technology, de-centralization and more. His content is fully researched often for weeks before uploading. He wants to make the world a more private place and he has succeeded. He is one of the last standing bastions of privacy and security on the internet. Not the only but the one I’d recommend the most.
He made videos about privacy and one of those were how to de-Proton after Proton came out with more products than we need from one company. What The Hated One said about it is that Proton is basically becoming Google but more private. While that is true there has been stories of people getting locked out of their account and not being able to access anything. This is due to the fact that your passwords, 2fa codes and email will all be within Proton. He is also very clear in his ways and is not scared to turn down sponsorships. In-fact he has none!
Mental Outlaw
focused on Privacy, GNU/Linux and FOSS. Additionally he makes occasional videos about some other things. He is one of the few people you know is reliable. Much like The Hated One, his knowledge is great on the things he says. The best thing about Mental Outlaw is that he is really just reporting it as it is. Similarly to The Hated One, it’s basically from the heart and above all it’s very much about Linux. His channel is very authentic and is very much recommended as well.
SomeOrdinaryGamers
Much like the previous two, he is speaking truthfully about everything that the other two talks about too. He also shows off how viruses works and certain operating systems. He showed North Korea’s operating system before. It was a good video. Anyways I think he is a good pick if you like everything advanced in tech. Like the other two there are no sponsors. His content is great.
Check out SomeOrdinaryGamers
Naomi Brockwell
This content creator, talks a lot about privacy, security and crypto. I’ve seen a lot of great videos but I do feel she sometimes talk more to the people who are newer in the privacy field. I did see a few things that was quite advanced too but I think she might be your best pick if you are new to privacy and security.
I do recommend to check out Naomi Brockwell but the reason she is not green is because she has sponsors and I am against that. Her content is completely fine. I do recommend to check her out if you don’t mind sponsors.
Techlore
Surveillance report is fine really just reporting with a slight touch of opinion, you can listen to it for what is going on. The problem for me with Techlore’s content is that he claimed things in the past that wasn’t true. One of them was that GrapheneOS wasn’t safe and suddenly after three-four years of shouting about how bad it was, then he started recommending it again.
He also said that he thinks iPhone is fine for certain threat models of privacy which it may very well be but I am not on board. He had a time where he daily drove a standard android. These are examples of behavior that I can’t get behind his content. Yes I use a MacOS computer but I blocked all Apple via DNS. That is impossible on iPhone as it has one VPN slot and that VPN slot also is the DNS slot. (unless that has been changed).
The Problems
My biggest issue with Techlore is that he is not as always the most precise when it comes to the technical side. He sometimes attempt to talk about things he don’t know instead of looking into it.
I got one more problem. The problem I have is that his way of threat modeling is way too broad. To me it’s okay that some people don’t want GrapheneOS but we can’t have privacy with a stock Android with google on it. That is some fucking bullshit and people will follow his content because he has subs. It’s a rotten carrot.
I recommend listening to Techlore but only surveillance report and only listen as you’d listen to a news anchor that isn’t being neutral. Listen to what they say but don’t listen to their opinions.
Rob Braxman
He does tell some true stuff and he does have some good things but he also is really good at making smaller problems sound like the end of the world. Rob Braxman is not a favorite of mine, he seems to be intelligent, you can’t talk like that without knowing tech. My issue about his content is that he seems more focused on selling his phones and fear mongering than actually trying to help. The phones he sells is allegedly pretty outdated and overpriced.
I think you can listen to Rob Braxman but I think you gotta be very careful how much you believe. The content he makes will just worry you. Also his practice of scaring people into buying phones are very dishonorable.
