Slate 7 (GL.BE3600)
The Slate 7 doesn’t have very strong signal, this may or may not be a good thing for you but here is why think that its perfect. You might want strong signal but consider this. A strong signal can reach people outside your home while a weak signal might stay within a single home. This is great for network security as you can’t hack things you cannot connect to right? Not unless you count throwing a stone through the window and hitting the router or physically gaining access to it.
If you have a big home, you should consider Wi-Fi extenders or better yet if you have money, a mesh Wi-Fi system. A mesh Wi-Fi system consists of multiple interconnected devices (nodes) that work together to provide seamless internet coverage across larger areas than traditional routers or extenders can typically manage. Here’s an in-depth look at how mesh systems function, their benefits, and considerations for use. This is also more expensive to pull off but if you really need to extend the connection this is a way better option than Wi-Fi extenders which will do okay. It really depends on you, what you can live with and what you really need.

Setup Instructions for your Slate
- Turn on the Slate device.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the WAN port to the pfSense LAN port. I prefer to connect it next to the WAN port. If you setup VPN on 1 port then use that port.
- Link a computer to the Wi-Fi router using either an Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi.
- Open your browser and try to navigate to 192.168.8.1 to connect to your Router’s OpenWRT.
- If the connection is successful, proceed to “Provide a new secure password” below.
- If the connection is denied, press and hold the reset button for 15 seconds, allow the device to reboot completely, and try again.
- If the connection still fails, access the pfSense portal in your browser, go to “Status” > “DHCP Leases,” and note the router’s IP address. Then, navigate to that IP address in your browser.
- Choose your preferred language and set a new secure password when prompted.
- Go to “System” > “Upgrade” and install any available updates.
- Allow the device to reboot completely and reconnect to it.
- Optionally, verify that you have the latest version at https://dl.gl-inet.com/.
- Proceed to “System” > “Time Zone” and select your preferred option.
- Under “Wireless” > “2.4G WiFi,” click on “Modify.”
- Rename the SSID to something more private.
- Change the security password to a more secure option and click “Apply.”
- Repeat this process for the “5G WiFi” option to rename and secure it.
- If needed, disable “Wireless” > “2.4GHZ” > “Guest WiFi.”
- If needed, disable “Wireless” > “5GHZ” > “Guest WiFi.”
- Click on “Network” > “Network Mode” > “Access Point” > “Apply.”
- Reboot the router, reconnect, test the login, and ensure your VPN is active.
- Connect your Wi-Fi to either SSID on the router and confirm the connection.
Now Your Network Is Secure!
